Dear Pdavis,
Love the classic Winchester Model 42s? I know the feeling. I've got three of them. They are as cute as puppies, but real shooters too.
I also tried the Browning Reproduction Model 42 made in Japan. Excellent gun in all respects, except one. They have an interrupter built in. This interrupter forces the shooter to very slightly push the forend forward after pulling the trigger, or else the forend won't unlock. In a 12 or 20 gauge pump gun it doesn't matter because the recoil of the gun moves the gun rearward and thus the forend forward as it is being held in the hand. It sort of unlatches itself due to the recoil.
Not so with the light recoil of the .410. You have to wait just a moment for the forend to unlatch after pulling the trigger on the Japanese Model 42. It drove me crazy. With a real Model 42, you could pump as quickly as you wished and nothing kept you from it. The real gun is so smooth.
It would be unfair of me to say that the interrupter affects all shooters. Some guys take their time pumping the gun and never notice it. But if you are someone who really wants to make a Model 42 sing, stay away from the interrupter reproduction guns.
Of course, I tried to remove the interrupter in my Japanese Model 42, but to no avail. It's really built in. Others have tried to stone down the interrupter so that it is less 'catchy', but I've not seen anyone do this successfully.
Bottom line: if you want to pump sedately, the Japanese Model 42 is fine. If you want your Model 42 to sound like a machine gun, stick with the original American-made gun.

Sls run in shed dividing wallsugars legacy stables. Today, a plain Jane field grade real Winchester Model 42 in fair cosmetic, but good mechanical, condition, goes for about $1,500. Yes, I know that's an absurd price, but that's what it is these days. The sky's the limit for fancier models as you will then be bidding against collectors. A little scouring of http://www.gunsinternational.com, http://www.gunsamerica.com and http://www.gunbroker.com will turn up real Model 42s in all price ranges.

I think that the best deal is to get a standard field gun in good mechanical shape, but not so hot cosmetic shape. Then send it off to Larry at http://simmonsguns.com/ , along with $1,300, to get it reblued, jeweled, new wood front and back and a glorious solid rib. It will cost you under $3,000 total, a loooong way from the $34 introductory price of the gun in 1933. But, for under the price of a middling O/U, you'll really have something.
